This event replaced the Alumni Student Luau last year. This event was aimed to kick of the weekend of events and put a Cleveland-spin on Oktoberfest with drinks, dinner and entertainment at the German gem of the North Coast, Hofbrauhaus Cleveland!  This event provided two awards voted on by the students: Faculty of The Year (Dr. Cristina Pratt) and Staff of the Year (Carla Ronnebaum). Additionally several Alumni Awards were given out to recognize different graduating classes. OPMSA worked exclusively with the Office of Advancement to make this event happen and they spearheaded most of the advertisement, emails, and promo’s. Ticket Prices for students was $25, if the student were to attend both Hofbrauhous and the Symposium the next morning (free) the student would receive $10 back.

This year’s OPMSA Golf Tournament was held at St. Denis in Chardon, Ohio. We decided to keep the golfers on their toes this year, so we opted to go with a different location than last year, which yielded great results! Jessica was the manager in charge at St. Denis and was a huge help in coordinating and providing the things we needed to make the event as successful as it was. We had two large sponsorship signs for the putting green and for the driving range that boasted a plethora of sponsors’ logos on each. Additionally, we posted signs on all 18 holes that advertised our hole sponsors. This year we wanted to open the tournament up to those with all different skill levels, so we held beginner group lessons with the course’s golf pro. We had a shotgun start that started at 10:30am and the beginner lessons started at 1:00pm. We hosted around 112 total golfers and 8 beginner golfers. Each golfer received a goodie bag comprised of raffle tickets, KSUCPM swag including golf jackets and t-shirts, as well as golf balls and tees. Each golfer also received a steak dinner to top off the night as we raffled off our many prizes! Unfortunately, no golfer won the hole-in-one prize of a free Cadillac, but many other prizes were won such as drivers and putters, courtesy of our Premier Sponsor, OCPM Foundation.

The Symposium was held at Kent State University College of Podiatric Medicine in Classrooms C this year. We had about 85 students take part in the symposium. We gave a discount to the Hofbrahous for the first students who signed up and showed up to both events. We had 8 great speakers come in which we were extremely thankful for. Names of the speakers included Chris Hyer, Lawrence DiDomenico, Jonathan Sharpe, Georganne Botek, Karen Kellog, Michael Dujela, Christina Pratt, Alan Block, and Mark Razzante. We held a student workshop that was sponsored by Trilliant Surgical and was open to the first 60 students who signed up. The workshop taught many beginner students the in’s and out’s of suturing on pigs feet and helped the seasoned students fine-tune their skills. We provided about 100 pairs of light blue and dark blue scrubs for students on a first come first serve basis. We catered breakfast that consisted of pastries and fruit as well as a taco bar lunch courtesy of Aramark.

Hall of Fame Dinner

The Hall of Fame Dinner this year was held at the gorgeous Severance Hall in Cleveland. This venue is very sentimental to the alumni as many of them held their graduation ceremony here before the college merged. 55 Student Leaders were able to attend the event free of charge due to significant donations from leaders in our profession. The event included several awards for the Alumni, KSUCPM Hall of Fame Inductees, as well as several student awards. Chandler Ligas was awarded Student of the Year and the Thomas V. Melillo full tuition scholarship. Kristen Brett was awarded the OCPM Foundation Student Leadership Award. Finally, this year was special as OPMSA was able to award the inaugural KSUCPM Outstanding Podiatric Medical Student Award to Shayla Robinson. This was a scholarship that was started from all of the net funds from the hard work of last years alumni-student weekend. The alumni-student weekend from this year will continue to add to the endowed scholarship fund, so we cannot thank you enough for your generous donations and sponsorships to make this scholarship possible!
